Let By, 2017

Let By was a community empowerment project, creating a temporary public art gallery informed by and showcasing Stokes community. The project was designed to reference the monopolisation of property markets on aesthetics and characters of our towns and cities and to open a door to Let By and celebrate the people who inhabit them.

I was commissioned by the council and local arts organisation to make a project that reflected on the state of the housing crisis in Stoke on Trent. I wanted to create a project that put the faces and stories of local people on the streets.

I worked with local community to create  20+ signs that, with permissions, we erected on residential and business premises around Stoke on Trent. The signs were photographs and words of local people, I conducted over 40 interviews during the month long project. Although the signs were only up for a month the community decided to permanently erect them in the indoor market in the town.
