Remains, 2023
In 2023 I was commissioned by Supercultre to create a site specific response to Weston Super Mare as part of their Promenade project. Promenade commissioned artists to create site specific temporary responses to the coastline in WSM. Audiences were able to view the artwork over a number of days alongside newly commissioned live dance and music performances all responding to the site.
My artwork responded to the pier, a beautiful iconic symbol not only of WSM itself but also a fragile intervention, tension and balance between the built and natural worlds. I was inspired to look more at water recently due to the news and images of the Nova Khakovka damn being destroyed and the phrase used in news reports; ‘water and our environment is being used as a weapon in war’ This and the dry summer we have been having are both inextricably linked to the wider climate crisis and our relationship with our environment. This compels me as always to create work that makes people reflect on and connect with their natural environment.
My idea was to create a long flag/pier like structure and create a large drawing/painting using washes from the beach sands, muds and material found on the beach.
